Mandate for the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) 

Mission: To be a world-class research station in Canada’s Arctic that is on the cutting edge of Arctic issues. The Station will anchor a strong research presence in Canada’s Arctic that serves Canada and the world. It will advance Canada’s knowledge of the Arctic in order to improve economic opportunities, environmental stewardship, and the quality of life of Northerners and all Canadians.

Q1. What is the Canadian High Arctic Station?

A1. The Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) will provide a year-round world-class hub for science and technology in Canada’s North.  The new Station will complement and anchor the existing network of smaller regional facilities across the North and will comprise a suite of services for science and technology in Canada’s North. The Station will be built in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut.

Feasibility Study

The Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) Feasibility Study led by Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada with support from Public Works and Government Services Canada presents the results of a two-year period of consultation with a broad range of stakeholders on the nature of the future station.  The report provides an overview of the design specifications, the functional program and the science and technology mandate for the Station.
